I believe hair extensions should be a confidence boost—not something you stress over. You shouldn’t have to worry about visible wefts or whether the color blends seamlessly. Whether you’re brand new to extensions or have been rocking them for years, taking care of them properly makes all the difference in how long they last and how amazing they look. I’ve gotten plenty of questions over the years in my DMs and during consultations, so I’m answering the most common ones to help you get the most out of your extensions.
Can You Pull Your Hair Up in a Ponytail with Beaded Row Extensions?
Absolutely! One of the standout benefits of my extension method is its versatility. Whether you're hitting the gym or heading out for a brunch date, you can confidently pull your hair into a ponytail without worrying about visible wefts. My custom sectioning and placement ensure your extensions remain hidden, giving you a sleek, polished ponytail every time.
For those of you interested in the specifics, my sectioning technique is customized for each client. Everyone has unique head shapes and hair densities, so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
With the NBR extension method, I section higher up in the hairline and ensure the placement follows the natural curves of your head and bone structure. Think of it like a teardrop shape when viewed from above! This not only makes the extensions more comfortable but also keeps them hidden. Plus, this method of sectioning ensures you have more face-framing pieces so your extensions never look like 🎵 you want your mullet back. 🎵
Can You Work Out with NBR Extensions?
Yes! You can maintain an active lifestyle without compromising your hair goals. Before a workout, secure your hair in a braid, bun, or ponytail to prevent tangling. That gym ponytail will boost your confidence and turn heads!
After your workout, refresh your roots with a light mist of water, blow-dry, and some dry shampoo. I recommend Davines This is an Invisible Dry Shampoo—stock up because it sells out fast! It’s THAT good.
If you’re doing a sweatier workout, like hot yoga or swimming, I like to blow-dry at least the top of the wefts since this area will take the longest to dry. However, I now only use Genius Wefts, which means you can air dry your hair without worrying about your wefts longevity! Hand-Tied hair can be damaged from prolonged dampness, but that is one of the benefits of using Genius wefts! You can sweat and swim and not have to worry about your hair!
How Should You Brush Extensions?
The secret to long-lasting extensions starts with the right brushing technique. Use a Wet Brush, which glides gently over both your natural hair and extensions. Always start at the ends and work your way up to prevent unnecessary tension on the wefts. This simple step keeps your extensions tangle-free and looking their best.
How Often Should Your Extension Move Up Appointment Be?
Regular maintenance is key to keeping your extensions secure and seamless. I recommend scheduling a tightening appointment every 6 to 8 weeks to prevent slippage and keep your hair looking flawless. If you have finer hair, you may want to opt for appointments closer to the 6-week mark to ensure your extensions stay perfectly in place.
How Often Should You Replace the Wefts of Hair?
With proper care, your extensions can last six months to a year before needing replacement. If you’d prefer to keep your hair looking fresh year-round or want a color change, you can switch out pieces more often.
Hand-tied hair extensions tend to need to be switched out every 6 months so they look their best. This is another reason I made the switch to Genius Wefts! With these new wefts, your extensions will last even longer! My clients and I are getting new hair once a year, sometimes a little longer depending on how well you care for your hair!
Using the right products and techniques—like low-heat styling tools, heat protectant, and protective styles (braids while sleeping, working out, or swimming)—can also extend the lifespan of your extensions.
Here are some of my must-have products for maintaining gorgeous extensions:
Davines Oi Oil – Nourishing heat protectant that adds shine without weighing hair down.
Davines Melu Hair Shield – A lightweight heat protectant that keeps extensions healthy.
Davines Oi All in One Milk – Hydrating, detangling, and heat-protecting—this product does it all.
Davines Oi Hair Butter – A weekly mask to deeply nourish and restore extensions.
Which Products Should You Avoid with Extensions?
The right hair care routine makes all the difference. Always choose sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to maintain moisture and prevent damage. Be mindful of high-protein shampoos like Olaplex. While they can be great for natural hair, they may deposit too much protein onto extensions, leading to dryness and brittleness.
Here are some of my favorite extension-safe products:
Davines Oi Shampoo – A sulfate-free formula that keeps extensions soft and vibrant.
Davines Oi Conditioner – Hydrates and smooths your strands for a sleek, polished finish.
Davines Hair Butter - A rich, nourishing treatment that deeply hydrates and restores dry, damaged hair, leaving it softer, smoother, and full of shine.
Hand-tied extensions aren’t just about achieving your dream hair—they’re about doing it in a way that protects your natural hair and makes you feel amazing. I take pride in creating a welcoming, empowering environment where you leave feeling your absolute best.
