Natural Beaded Rows (NBR) vs. Tape-Ins vs. Sew-Ins: Which Is Right for You?
Updated: Oct 16
Let's peek under the hood! 👀 My client is lifting her hair to show off her NBR row with the wefts sewn in. See how her natural color melts right into the roots of her wefts? That's custom coloring at work. So when her hair moves, or the wind kicks up, it all blends like it grew that way. No one will ever know you're wearing extensions... unless you tell them!
So Many Extension Methods. Which One Is Yours?
If you've been searching for hair extensions in Seattle, you've probably fallen down the rabbit hole. NBR vs. Tape-Ins vs. Sew-Ins, hand-tied extensions, invisible bead extensions... it's a lot. And nearly every new client asks me the
same question before booking: "Which method is actually right for me?"
It's a smart question. The method you choose shapes how your hair looks, how it feels day to day, and how healthy your natural hair stays over time. The right extensions should feel like you, just more.
I'm Angela Flint, an NBR (Natural Beaded Rows) licensed artist at Angela Flint Styling Salon. Below, I'll walk you through Natural Beaded Rows vs. tape-in extensions vs. sew-ins: how each works, what they cost in time and upkeep, and who each one suits best. No hard sell, just the honest picture so you can choose with confidence.
Quick Comparison: NBR vs. Tape-Ins vs. Sew-Ins
Short on time? Here's how the three methods compare side by side.
Natural Beaded Rows (NBR) | Tape-In Extensions | Sew-In / Weft Extensions | |
How it attaches | Wefts sewn to a custom beaded track | Adhesive tape panels sandwich your hair | Wefts sewn onto braids or a track |
Glue, heat, or chemicals | None | Adhesive tape and remover | Usually none |
Install time | 30 to 45 minutes per row | About 45 minutes to 2 hours | About 2.5 hours of braiding and sewing, up to 5 hours with prep |
Removal time | Under 5 minutes | Remover is applied and left to soak off the adhesive, 5 to 10 minutes before; panels are then separated one by one and washed with an adhesive remover | Threads snipped and braids taken down by hand |
Upfront cost | $$$ | $$ | $$ |
Move-ups | Every six to eight weeks | Every 4 to 8 weeks | Take down within about 8 weeks |
Damage risk | Low with a licensed stylist | Moderate if removed correctly | Moderate; braids can add tension |
Best for | Fine to thick hair, sensitive scalps, active lifestyles | Fine hair wanting a lighter, budget-friendly option | Thicker or textured hair that holds braids well |

How Natural Beaded Rows, NBR, Work
Natural Beaded Rows is a hand-sewn extension method that uses no glue, no heat, and no chemicals. That's why NBR extensions have become one of the most requested options for clients who want volume and length without compromise.
From the inside out! 📸 In photo one, my client shows off her beaded row, the custom foundation of her NBR extensions. Photo two shows her wefts sewn in and lying flat. And in the video, I brush out her finished style so you can see how naturally it moves. Swishy, bouncy, and totally her!
Here's what happens during an NBR install:
A custom beaded track. I place a row of small beads around your head, shaped to your head. Every track is mapped for your best placement, comfort, and styling. No two are alike.
Lightweight, gentle materials. I use aluminum non-phosphorus beads with wig-grade thread to build a strong, flexible base.
Wefts sewn to the track. Your extension wefts are sewn onto the thread that runs between each bead, so the weight is spread evenly instead of pulling on a few strands. I started my career using hand-tied wefts, and today I use the new and improved Genius weft. It lies flatter against your head, and there's no itchy "mustache" of short hairs at the return. Just a smooth, comfortable fit.
One to three rows. Depending on your goals, you may wear one, two or three rows. One row adds subtle fullness. Three rows can take you to the hair of your dreams.
Because the beads sit hidden under your natural hair, many clients search for NBR as "invisible bead extensions." The result is movement and blend that look like the hair you were born with, only fuller.
Less Time in the Chair
One of my favorite things about NBR is the timing. Each row takes just 30 to 45 minutes to install. And when it's time for removal? Under 5 minutes. No adhesive to dissolve, no braids to take down, no picking out residue. That's a huge time saver at every appointment, and more of your day back for the things you love.
Pros: no adhesives or heat, removal in under 5 minutes, weight spread evenly, a custom fit, and a natural, seamless blend. Considerations: NBR is a higher upfront investment, and a full three-row install can take longer than tape-ins. It should only be done by a trained NBR extension specialist.
How Tape-In Extensions Work

Tape-in extensions are thin panels of hair with adhesive strips. A stylist sandwiches a small section of your natural hair between two panels and presses them together. Installs are quick, and the panels lie flat against the head.
Pros: fast install, lightweight, lower upfront cost, and a good choice for fine hair that wants subtle volume.
Cons: they rely on adhesive and a solvent to remove the panels. Oils, conditioner and heat near the roots can loosen the tape. If they're removed roughly or worn too long, the tape can pull on your natural hair. They may be detected when the wind blows or if your hair is too thin to hide them.
Reapplication cycle: as your hair grows, the panels move away from the scalp. They need to be removed, re-taped and reinstalled on a regular schedule. Each panel gets new tape at every appointment.
Tape-ins are a solid entry point for many people. If you'd rather skip adhesives entirely, NBR is the method to look at.
How Sew-In Weft Extensions Work

A traditional sew-in starts by braiding your natural hair into tight cornrows close to the scalp. Wefts of extension hair are then sewn onto the braids with a needle and thread. It's one of the oldest and most durable extension methods.
Pros: no glue or heat, a secure hold, and lots of volume. Sew-ins work especially well for thicker or textured hair that holds a braid.
Cons: braids can create tension at the scalp, and some clients find them heavy or tight for the first few days. Your natural hair underneath is harder to wash and condition well. Fine or thin hair often can't support the braids comfortably.
Maintenance: sew-ins need to be taken down and re-braided as your hair grows out.
NBR shares the sewn-weft idea, but swaps braids for a light beaded track. That means less tension and a flatter, more natural finish, especially for finer hair.
Who Should Choose NBR Hair Extensions?
NBR is a strong fit if any of these sound like you:
You have fine or thinning hair. The beaded track spreads the weight of the wefts across many points, so your hair isn't carrying the load alone. Genius wefts keep the install thin and light.
You have a sensitive scalp. No glue, no heat and no chemicals means nothing harsh sits against your skin. Because every track is shaped to your head, it's built for comfort from day one.
You live an active life. Hiking Tiger Mountain, hot yoga, or a rainy Seattle commute? NBR holds up to sweat, workouts and Pacific Northwest weather without adhesives slipping.
You want a natural, long-term solution. If you're planning to wear extensions for the long haul, NBR is designed for repeat installs that protect your own hair along the way.
You care about how your salon works. At Angela Flint Styling Salon, I pair NBR with Davines color and care, a thoughtful, more sustainable choice for clients who look for natural hair salons in Seattle.
One honest note: NBR adds beautiful length and fullness, but it doesn't add density at the crown or along your part line. If that's your main goal, we'll talk about it at your consultation.
